CVC Word Builder – Full Edition

How it works

The Teacher's Master Card lists all 14 sets. Each set pairs two word families, such as ad/at, ig/ix or ub/up, so children compare similar sounds side by side.

Three stages of word building

• Stage 1 – Beginning Sounds: children listen for the first sound and add the missing letter.
• Stage 2 – Ending Sounds: the same set comes straight back with the last sound missing, so each set is built twice in a row.
• Stage 3 – Vowel Sounds (Mixed): once all 14 sets are done, the words are mixed so every slide has one of each vowel sound, and children add the missing middle sound.
• Teacher's Choice: a blank template to add your own words and pictures.

What is the CVC Word Builder – Full Edition?

The free CVC Word Builder introduces word building with 16 words. The Full Edition takes the same whiteboard relay much further: 56 words in 14 sets, with every short vowel and two word families in each set.

Letters are shown in a banner at the top of each slide to support children who are still learning to write their letters. You can also use the free printable letter tiles.

How We Play

Split the class into two teams. The teacher calls out a word and one child from each team races to the board to find the missing sound and complete the word, while teammates listen, think and help.

Why teachers use it

• Beginning and ending sounds, set by set: children add the first sound, then go straight on to the last sound with the same words.
• A mixed vowel finale: one of each vowel sound on every Stage 3 slide keeps children listening carefully.
• Word families side by side help children notice patterns such as -an and -am.
• Two-team relay format keeps the whole class involved.
• No prep beyond opening the file on your whiteboard. You can also print the slides for small groups.
